Why Winter Is One of the Most Important Seasons in the Vineyard

When most people picture vineyards, they imagine lush green vines, heavy clusters of grapes, and harvest season excitement. But some of the most important work of the entire year actually happens in February, when the vineyard appears quiet on the surface.

Winter is not downtime — it is foundation-building season, and what happens now plays a major role in the wines that will eventually fill your glass.

The Vineyard Is “Sleeping”… But Not Really

During winter dormancy, the vines rest after the demands of harvest, conserving energy underground in their root systems. This rest period is essential for long-term vine health and ensures balanced growth when spring arrives.

While the vines appear still, our vineyard team is actively preparing for the next vintage behind the scenes.

Pruning: The Most Important Job of the Season

One of the biggest tasks happening in February is pruning, a precise and thoughtful process that shapes how the vine will grow in the coming months.

Each vine is carefully trimmed to:

  • Control how many grape clusters it will produce

  • Balance fruit quality versus quantity

  • Improve airflow and sunlight exposure

  • Maintain the long-term structure of the vine

Thoughtful pruning directly impacts flavor concentration, structure, and consistency in the wines you’ll taste in future vintages.

Watching the Weather Closely

Winter weather plays a major role in vineyard planning. Rainfall helps replenish soil moisture for the upcoming growing season, while temperature patterns influence the timing of bud break, the moment in early spring when the vines begin to wake up again.

Too warm too early can accelerate growth; cooler conditions help keep the vines on a steady, balanced schedule. Every season is different, which is one of the many reasons no two vintages are ever exactly the same.

From Winter Work to Your Wine Glass

The careful decisions made in the vineyard now — pruning strategy, vine balance, and seasonal preparation — quietly shape the wines you’ll enjoy months and even years from today. Great wine doesn’t begin at harvest; it begins long before, during these thoughtful winter months.

Visit the Vineyard This Season

Winter is also a beautiful time to visit. With open views across the vineyard, cozy fire pits, and slower afternoons, it’s the perfect season to relax with friends, bring a picnic, and enjoy a glass of wine while watching the vineyard prepare for the next chapter.

As the vines begin their journey toward spring, we look forward to sharing each stage of the growing season with you — one glass at a time.
